The City of Brisbane was established by the Government of Queensland to consolidate the Brisbane metropolitan area under a unified planning and governance framework. The City of Brisbane Act 1924 was granted assent by the Governor on October 30, 1924. Consequently, on October 1, 1925, a total of 20 local government areas were dissolved and amalgamated into this new entity.

Administered by the Brisbane City Council, the largest local council in Australia, the governance of the City of Brisbane is structured as follows: it comprises a Lord Mayor, a council consisting of twenty-six representatives elected from single-member wards each representing approximately 23,000 voters (a size akin to state electorates), and a Civic Cabinet. The Civic Cabinet is composed of the Lord Mayor, the Deputy Mayor (selected from the majority on the Council), and the chairpersons of the seven standing committees, all chosen from the Council’s membership.

The Lord Mayor, elected through the largest single-member electorate in Australia due to the City of Brisbane’s status as the largest LGA in the country, holds extensive executive authority, as is typical for mayors across Queensland.
