Captain Patrick Logan, the Commandant of the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement, was renowned for his exploratory zeal. During his initial expedition in 1826, he stumbled upon the Logan River, recognizing its potential for accommodating large vessels and providing access to fertile land along its banks. Impressed by its attributes, Logan dubbed the surrounding region Darling, as a tribute to the Governor. In a reciprocal gesture, the Governor later renamed the river after Logan himself.
Following the closure of the Brisbane-based penal settlement in 1841, the land was swiftly claimed by squatters. Land leases in the Logan area commenced in 1849, with immigration actively encouraged after Queensland’s separation from New South Wales in 1859. The establishment of the Logan and Eight Mile Plains Agricultural Reserves in 1862 spurred significant settlement in the area, further augmented by the arrival of German immigrants in successive waves from 1864 onwards. The allure of owning their own farm, bolstered by generous land grants for immigrants in Queensland, attracted settlers to the region.
In 1867, a cotton gin was constructed at Loganholme, later repurposed as a sugar mill. However, cotton growers encountered challenges such as inclement weather and a scarcity of labor despite the utilization of Kanaka laborers. Consequently, by the 1870s, the number of operational cotton plantations along the Logan River dwindled. Sugar, proving to be more economically viable, emerged as the dominant industry between 1866 and 1874, supplanting cotton as the area’s primary agricultural pursuit.
