History of Ipswich

Ipswich stands as the second-oldest local government area in Queensland, trailing only behind Brisbane. Its journey towards municipal status began on November 16, 1859, following the enactment of the Municipalities Act of 1858 in New South Wales. At that time, a petition with 91 signatures, representing a population of 3,000, was submitted to the Governor of New South Wales, seeking municipal town status for Ipswich. The petition, unopposed by any counter-petition, was promptly gazetted the next day.

As Queensland was granted separate colony status by Queen Victoria on November 29, 1859, the petition was forwarded to the new Queensland governor, Sir George Ferguson Bowen. On December 10, 1859, the same day Queensland’s letters patent were published, the petition was re-gazetted. The Borough of Ipswich was formally proclaimed on March 3, 1860, with its inaugural elections occurring on April 19, 1860, resulting in John Murphy’s appointment as its first Mayor. The corporate logo of the Municipality was crafted by Reverend Lacey H. Rumsey, rector of St Paul’s Church in Ipswich, in 1861.

Ipswich sought city status on November 22, 1904, and it was granted by the Government of Queensland on December 1, 1904, with Hugh Reilly serving as its first mayor. Initially, the City of Ipswich encompassed only the central area, with what are now considered inner suburbs forming part of different entities.

From 1994 onwards, Ipswich embarked on an innovative community-driven information technology project, aiming to position itself as a leading technology hub in the emerging era of the information superhighway. Known as Global Info-Links, the initiative notably featured the establishment of a new library providing free public internet access and the development of a subscription-based wide area network.
