Around 6000 years ago, the rising sea levels gave rise to Moreton Bay, submerging what were once the floodplains of the Brisbane River. This bay and its surrounding islands were home to indigenous tribes whose economy thrived on the abundant natural resources of the area. Renowned for its rich yields of edible resources, the indigenous economy of Moreton Bay was among the most robust on the Australian continent. Vital to intertribal trade and ceremonial life were extensive oyster beds, the annual mullet catch, and bunya nut harvesting, both along the coast and inland. These resources fueled annual migrations, as tribes ventured to enjoy the abundance of each other’s territories.
In the 1840s, resident white administrators estimated the indigenous population of the area to be approximately 4,000. However, their numbers were swiftly surpassed by the influx of European migrants in the five-year period from 1850 to 1855, during which around 3,000 migrants disembarked on indigenous land, altering the demographic landscape significantly.
