History of Redland

The Redlands region, initially inhabited by the Jagera, Turrbal, and Quandamooka peoples, witnessed European exploration in the late 18th century as navigators such as James Cook, Matthew Flinders, and Robert Dixon traversed its landscapes, making observations and surveys.

By the 1840s, the coastal township of Cleveland emerged as a potential major port, rivaling Brisbane. However, due to prevalent sandbars, shipwrecks, and unfavorable assessments by Governor George Gipps during his 1842 visit, this ambition was thwarted. Nevertheless, figures like Louis Hope initiated significant infrastructure developments during this period.

The governance of the region underwent several transformations: the Tingalpa Division was established on November 11, 1879, governing the eastern area of metropolitan Brisbane, while the Cleveland Division emerged on May 30, 1885, focusing on the area around Cleveland. Both divisions transitioned into Shires on March 31, 1903, operating under the Local Authorities Act 1902, with Tingalpa’s council convening at Mount Cotton.

On October 1, 1925, a notable portion of the Shire of Tingalpa, including suburbs west of Tingalpa Creek, merged into the new City of Brisbane alongside 20 other local governments. Further reorganization occurred on December 9, 1948, when the Shire of Cleveland was renamed the Shire of Redland, absorbing a portion of the Shire of Tingalpa.

The 20th century witnessed significant population growth in the Redlands, catalyzed by developments such as the construction of the Cleveland railway line. Peel Island served as a leper colony, while North Stradbroke Island became prominent for sand mining and gained recognition in the Indigenous rights movement as the home of poet Oodgeroo Noonuccal and academic Aileen Moreton-Robinson. On March 15, 2008, Redlands attained city status.
